Abstract

The purpose of this research is intended to draw the students’ writing ability of recount text used by the English teacher in Eighth year student at MTs Rogojampi in the academic year 2017/2018. The general problem of this study is how is the students’ writing ability of recount text used by the English teacher in Eighth year student at MTs Rogojampi in the academic year 2017/2018. The primary data are taken from questionnaire and the secondary data are taken from interview. The respondents of the research are the Eighth year student at MTs Rogojampi in the academic year 2017/2018. The total numbers of respondents are 60 students in the population that uses purposive sampling. In this research, the researcher uses the questionnaire as data collecting method. There are 70,42% mean score of orientation, 76,7% mean score of series of events, 72,9% mean score of re-orientation aspect, 54,58% mean score of grammar, and 54,58 mean score of vocabulary aspects. The result of questionnaire is the Eighth year students at MTs Rogojampi in the academic year 2017/2018 are good enough in writing recount text. It is fair enough to say that the student needs more improvement from the way how they learn English, how to write a good paragraph and also knowing the category of the text, especially conducting to recount text. This research can be used as consideration in selection of writing ability, especially about recount text.

Abstract

This research was an experimental research. The purpose of this research was to measure there is an effect of pop-up books on the sentence writing achievement of the eighth grade students‟ of SMPU Al-Anwari Banyuwangi in the 2017/2018 academic year. The area of this research was SMPU Al-Anwari Banyuwangi. It was chosen purposively because they have never been taught by using „Pop-Up‟ books at this school. Another reason was that the permission to conduct this research in this school from the headmaster has already accepted. The population of this research was all of the eighth grade students of SMPU Al-Anwari Banyuwangi in the 2017/2018 academic year. The total number of the respondents was 48 students, consisting of 24 students of grade VIII A as the experimental group and 24 students of VIII B as the control group. Based on the result of the data analysis of t-test formula, it can be known that value of t-test is higher than that of the t-critical (2,464 > 2,013). It shows that there is a significant effect of pop-up books on the sentence writing achievement of the eighth grade students‟ of SMPU Al-Anwari Banyuwangi in the 2017/2018 academic year. Based on the result, it is suggested that the students to use pop-up books as a guide in writing simple present tense sentences. Further, the English teachers are suggested to apply pop-up book as media in teaching English to improve the students sentence writing achievement and make them understand the lesson, and the future researchers are also suggested to use these results of the research as information or a reference to conduct a further and better research which focuses on the same problem by using different research design, such as a classroom action research to improve the students writing skill especially for English subject.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out the description of the implementation of Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM) in teaching writing descriptive text to the eighth grade students of SMP Sunan Giri 2 Kalipuro in the 2019/ 2020 academic year. In teaching and learning English, there are many strategies used by the teacher. In teaching writing, one of the strategy can be used is Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM). The design of this research is descriptive qualitative. The research was conducted at SMP Sunan Giri 2 Kalipuro, and the subject of the research are the English teacher and 30 students of eight grade of SMP Sunan Giri 2 Kalipuro. The respondents of the research were taken by using purposive sampling. The researcher took the data by using documentation, interview, questionnaire and test. The researcher analyzed the data of questionnaire by using Likert scale and to analyze the students’ writing test by scoring rubric. The result of the intervew to the English teacher showed that the use of media in teaching and learning process could the students more interested to study English in the class, one of the method was the implemented is Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM). The students’ responses indicate that the implementation of Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM) were very helpful to them in writing desriptive text. More that 50% of the students agree that the method had many benefits in teaching and learning process. The result of the test also showed a good achievement of the students in writing descriptive text. They get 79,4 in the average and 87% in good interpretation percentage. Therefore, it is recomended that PWIM can be used more often by English teacher in teaching English especially in teaching writing descriptive text.

Abstract

This study is aimed at describing the factors that cause students’ anxiety in speaking class and the strategies used by the students to overcome it. This research is categorized as descriptive qualitative research. It involved all the students of English educational department of PGRI University of Banyuwangi in the academic year 2017/2018 as the subjects of the research. The instruments were the observation sheets, reflection sheets, and a voice recorder. The data were collected through observations and interviews with the students and English speaking lecturer. The researcher also made data categorization before formulating the findings. The findings of the study describe five factors that cause anxiety. The first factor is fear of making mistakes. The mistakes that commonly happened here are on pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary. The second factor is the speaking tasks which demands classroom presentation. It is also related to students’ lack of confidence, preparation, and practice. The third is students’ self perceptions. The factor is about students’ thought and estimation towards their own capability in mastering the speaking skill which can influence their speaking performance. The next is gap of competence. The factor is dealing with students’ competence in English compared with others. The last is the role of the English speaking lecturer. It is related to lecturer’ ability to maintain suitable classroom activities for the students because it will affect the psychological condition of the students as well. The study also found some strategies used by students to cope with their anxiety. Those strategies are memorization, cognitive, and affective strategies.

Abstract

The thesis is about the effect of using literary film to improve speaking ability of the tenth grade student at MA Al Imarah Wongsorejo in the 2019/2020 academic year. The objective of this research is to know whether or not there is the effect of using literary film to improve speaking ability of the tenth grade student at MA Al Imarah Wongsorejo in the 2019/2020 academic year.The method used in this research is experimental quantitative method. The respondents of this research are 39 students of the tenth grade students. This research used purposive method to get the respondents of the research and the interview test to collect the data. The result of T- test is 13,420 and the T table value is 2,021 in the significant level 5% and degree of freedom was 37. It shows that the T-test value is higher than the value of T table. This data analysis is also strengthened by the average scores of students. The average score of the respondents’ posttest result was 73,974 which were higher than 39 in the experimental group that had gotten pretest. Based on the result of the data analysis and discussion, it can be concluded that, there is significant effect of literary film to improve speaking ability of Tenth Grade Students of MA Al Imarah Wongsorejo in 2019/2020 Academic year.
